High on a ridge at the edge of the Stein Wilderness, I was enjoying the cool mountain air and the scent of melting snow all around me. Our dog, Nido, was loving the day too – running ahead and back to join us, covering three times as much ground as everyone else.
There was a halo around the sun in the high, icy overcast. Ahead of the group, I stopped to rest and photograph the enormity of the spectacle – the giant coloured ring dwarfing the distant mountains. Nido suddenly bounded into the scene and sat down. I managed a quick photo of him silhouetted against the skyline before he took off running in another direction.
Our time with Nido didn't last long, but I will always remember him like this – larger than life and lording over the open space and the wind.
