Lens flare can be partly controlled by stopping the lens down. Since the size of the polygonal shapes that flare in the frame match the aperture, reducing the aperture should reduce the size (but possibly not the intensity) of the shapes. (First published Oct 30, 2011)

18.Jul.09'Dropped' pixels are pixels that malfunction and repeatedly produce a colour value that doesn't correspond to the rest of the photograph. Dropped pixels can be repaired using photography software.

17.Jul.09The black and white medium removes all colour cues from a photograph, leaving the establishment of mood entirely to composition and tone. As a result, it is often a much more existential format.

16.Jul.09One way to sidestep the law of reciprocity is to use a flash. A flash can adds a varying amount of light, so you can have more freedom to choose both shutter speed and aperture independently.

15.Jul.09When writing a quote on a photography job, be sure to not under-charge. Not only will you struggle to earn a living this way, but your client may wonder if your services will be lacking.

14.Jul.09When you don't have much time to take photos, set a definite deadline for yourself. Setting a deadline will let you concentrate on what you're doing for the time you have.

11.Jul.09PNG format files are used for some web-based images, but not usually for photographs. The PNG format is a more advanced version of the GIF format, and best suits vector and text-based graphics.

10.Jul.09A 'colorimeter' is a tool to measure colour from a computer monitor. Using a colorimeter and appropriate software, you can create a colour profile for your monitor.

09.Jul.09In pinhole photography, the length of the camera literally determines its focal length. Very long cameras (up to 8 feet on some cases) have a very long effective focal length, and vise versa.

08.Jul.09As the sun sinks lower in the sky, larger particles closer to the earth's surface block shorter light wavelengths and scatter longer ones – hence the beautiful yellow and red light at sunrise and sunset!

07.Jul.09Don't be afraid to work with many moods, themes, and feelings in your photography. Art is about communication, not simply about being pretty.

06.Jul.09Try styles of photography that you aren't normally interested in. The skills you learn will cross over and help you make the photographs you really want more effectively.

05.Jul.09Don't try to make every photograph beautiful. Try to communicate how you feel about your subject in your photography instead of only making an attractive image.

04.Jul.09Be careful when using the dials on a new camera body. Depending on the model, turning the dial the way you're used to turning it could result in the opposite result. Don't assume all cameras are designed the same!
