Lens flare can be partly controlled by stopping the lens down. Since the size of the polygonal shapes that flare in the frame match the aperture, reducing the aperture should reduce the size (but possibly not the intensity) of the shapes. (First published Oct 30, 2011)
03.Jun.09When shooting with slow shutter speeds, try using your camera's self timer instead of a cable or remote release – that's one less thing you'll have to dig out of your bag.
02.Jun.09When hand holding your camera, be sure that your shutter speed is fast enough to produce a sharp photo. Your shutter speed should always be shorter than the reciprocal of twice your lens length.
01.Jun.09If you don't have much time for photography, find a photo location and stick with it. This will let you spend less time in transit and more time on photography.
31.May.09Different camera bodies will usually expose slightly differently, even if they are the same model of camera. Be sure to test new equipment before using it for anything critical.
30.May.09When scanning a photograph, a 'dropped line' occurs when one pixel in the sensor malfunctions, causing a straight line of a random colour. A dropped line can be repaired using photography software.
29.May.09The theme of your photographs will vary from person to person. This doesn't necessarily mean your work is vague, just that everyone has a different way of interpreting art.
28.May.09Some forms of EMR (Electro-Magnetic Radiation) are invisible to people, but this doesn't mean they can't be photographed! Examples include X-ray photography and infrared photography.
27.May.09Take the time to read your camera's instruction manual. You may find features available to you that make your style of photography easier or more fun. You'll also find out how to use odd features that may come in handy!
26.May.09Most copyright issues on an individual level don't go to court. Usually, if one photographer is caught misrepresenting another's work as their own, the matter can be easily settled out of court.
25.May.09Watch out for 'grey market' gear when you're buying equipment. Grey market equipment is sold legally, but warranties usually do not apply in the country of purchase.
24.May.09Two or more photographs of the same scene can be combined digitally to produce a single photograph with a very wide depth of field. When using this technique, be sure to note it in the photo's description.
23.May.09Scanners usually use a linear image capture, moving a line of sensors over an image. As a result, noise from a scan usually appears as a straight line rather than random pixels.
22.May.09Film can be 'pulled' or developed at a lower ISO than the manufacturer recommends. For a film to be pulled, it must be exposed at the intended ISO, usually not more than 2 stops below normal.
21.May.09When close focusing on a rounded object, focus closer than you normally would. If the sides of the object are in focus but the front surface is not, the photo will usually look like a mistake.
20.May.09Buying a camera bag that suits your style of photography will make photography easier. Many styles are available – for running, large amounts of equipment, or even photography around water.
