The 'sunstar', caused by extreme highlight diffraction from aperture blades, can vary in size and quality depending on the format used. Smaller format camera systems tend to produce the star at larger apertures than larger format systems. (First published May 1, 2011)
04.May.09If you're worried that a filter will vignette a wide angle lens, try focusing the lens close, stopping down to a small aperture, and checking the DOF preview on a body with a 100 percent viewfinder.
03.May.09Try panning the camera to follow moving subjects, using a moderately slow shutter speed. The background will be blurred, but the subject will remain fairly sharp.
02.May.09'Clipping' a photo refers to the process of digitally stretching a photo's histogram so that the bottom grey values are black and the top ones are white. This increases contrast and removes 'fog'.
01.May.09Remember potential subjects for future visits. Try to imagine when conditions would be best for photography, and try to return at that time.
30.Apr.09Global contrast refers to the contrast in an entire photograph. A photograph with high global contrast will appear harsher, with less grey and more black and white tones.
29.Apr.09Matrix metering is the standard method of metering on most modern SLR style cameras. Matrix metering measures the light at many points in the frame, and uses software to guess the best exposure.
28.Apr.09When doing night photography, be sure that the battery in your camera is fresh. If the battery runs out, the shutter will close, ending the exposure before you planned.
27.Apr.09Short (wide angle) lenses exaggerate perspective, stretching the distance between near and far subjects. They can be used to maximize depth of field, or to create a wider field of view.
26.Apr.09When shooting on assignment, make sure it is clear who will own the photographs when you're finished. If you want to sell your photos later, be sure that your contract allows it.
25.Apr.09Dirty filters will not only blur photographs, but will also transfer dirt to the lenses you screw then onto. Clean your filters and any cases you store them in whenever you clean the rest of your camera gear.
24.Apr.09Some older camera bodies have viewfinders whose image is mirrored left to right. If you plan on using an antique camera, get used to composing with it before photographing with it for real.
23.Apr.09Metadata from a photograph created (or copied) within a computer will contain few details about the photograph. Usually, only date and creation information will be recorded.
22.Apr.09Each ISO (film or digital setting) is twice as sensitive as the last. For example, ISO 400 is 8 times as sensitive to light as ISO 50. Each step corresponds to a 1 stop exposure difference.
21.Apr.09'Tilt', is the rotation of the camera lens to increase or decrease the depth of field. Though traditionally a large-format movement, tilt lenses are available for smaller formats too.
20.Apr.09Trying to capture a dark moving subject against a bright background by using a long shutter speed sometimes doesn't work. The background will tend to overwhelm the subject, creating a photo that doesn't show your subject at all.
